The Doom Pile Excavator

That pile in the corner is not clutter. It is a geological sediment layer of delayed decisions. You cannot clean it. You must excavate it.

Safety Warning

Moving the pile without sorting it is churning. It feels like work but accomplishes nothing. This uses a 4-Box system to dismantle the structure piece by piece.

01
The 4-Box System
Four categories. One pass. Dump items into boxes without lingering. The goal is to create sorting structure, not to make decisions.
Box 01

Trash & Recycling

Obvious garbage. Wrappers, tags, old mail, empty boxes. This is the easy kill. Do this pass first to reduce volume fast.

Box 02

Laundry

Clothes, towels, blankets. Clean or dirty does not matter. If it is soft, it goes in a basket. Get it out of the pile immediately.

Box 03

Not Here

Cups belong in the kitchen. Books belong on the shelf. Put them in a transit box. Do not leave the room to put them away yet.

Box 04

The Purgatory Box

For: I do not know where this goes, or I have to decide if I keep this. Do not decide now. Put it in the box, seal it, deal with it next week.

02
Excavation Rules
The system breaks when you deviate. These rules exist to keep you moving.
01
One square foot. Clear one small patch. Ignore the rest. Limiting the area prevents overwhelm.
02
The five second rule. If you hold it for five seconds and do not know, it goes in purgatory. No lingering.
03
Stay in the room. Do not take a cup to the kitchen. Put it in relocate. Leaving ends the excavation.

Print the excavation log and track which boxes you fill.

Note: This is not about perfection. This is about breaking the inertia. Once you have boxes, you have structure. Structure breaks the freeze.
